Christmas 2012 starts with a BANG in Hanslope

Hanslope’s Christmas has really got going this weekend (15/16th December).

There was the successful Christmas Fayre on Saturday with the turning on of the Village Christmas Lights courtesy of The Friends of Hanslope.  Father Christmas was there and there was lots of music including fabulous jazz.  Competitions, games, stalls and even gifts for the youngsters of the Village.  A really great time was had by all.

On Sunday the Methodists had their Christmas Lunch followed by their Christingle and Christmas Carol Service in the afternoon.  A well attended and beautiful service with lots of well known carols including several children’s carols and Bible readings telling the Christmas Story.   The Rev Pat Nimmo explained the origins of Christingle, graphically illustrating her talk with visual aids.

St James the Great and St Simon and St Jude’s churches had their combined Carol Service in Castlethorpe Church on Sunday  evening.  Worshippers filled the church and participated in a service of nine lessons and nine carols supported by the absolutely fantastic Benefice Choir who are getting better and better every year.  In addition to leading the congregation in the Carols they sang four anthems brilliantly:

  1. “The Lord at first did Adam make” – an arrangement by Music Director Alex Allcock-Rouse from David Willcocks setting of an English traditional  carol.
  2. “Still, still, still” music arr Mack Wilberg (Austrian carol).
  3. “Adam lay y’bounden” anon 15th Century (arr Boris Ord)
  4. “A babe is born I wys” (arr F Bainton).

After this very moving reminder of the true meaning of Christmas the congregation shared Christmas greetings with Mulled Wine and Mince Pies.

PEACE ON EARTH – GOODWILL TO MEN (and the ladies!)

Craft@Chapel – Hanslope Methodist Church 8th December – photographs

Katherine Crowsley writes:
Christmas Craft@Chapel was held at Hanslope Methodist Church on Saturday 8th December. Children and adults enjoyed making Christmas crafts such as magazine Christmas tree table decorations, stained glass stars and iced gingerbread biscuits. We then joined together around a large silver star made by some of the children  to sing ‘It was on a starry night’ , and to  listen to a story told by Rev Pat. about the real message of Christmas.

Look out for another Craft @Chapel at Easter.

Hanslope and District Men’s Fellowship enjoy a Christmas Lunch

The Hanslope and District Men’s Group with guests enjoyed a pleasant and tasty Christmas Lunch at The Watts Arms, Hanslope on Wednesday 12th December 2012.

We were entertained to a fascinating and very entertaining talk by the Rev. Richard Caddell from Haversham Village in which he explained with much humour how an American ex-Naval helicopter pilot of eight years experience became the vicar of a group of English rural parishes!  We were mesmerised and even more so when he passed around his naval officer’s ceremonial sword for us to inspect.

Menu included:

Mains:  Roast Turkey with trimmings or Roasted Parsnip, Chestnut and Lentil Pudding.
Desserts: Christmas pudding,  Banana Boat, Chocolate Fudge Cake or a choice of ice creams.
Very tasty (with a glass of wine included).
